Summer is coming to a fast close, and I can’t say that I am going to be too disappointed about seeing the record setting hot temperatures go away. The sun has zapped the garden (only a handful of plants have persisted) and I’m ready to plant for the next season. Don’t worry San Antonio, before you know it we’ll be basking in those “cool” lower 90s temperatures in the Fall. On to the quick bites!
Looking to check out a new farmer’s market? Then you might want to make your way up to the Northwest side of town to get a sneak peek at Ripe this Sunday, August 18 on the Promenade at the Éilan Hotel & Spa. Curated by chef Stephan Pyles, the talent behind Sustenio, the restaurant that calls Éilan Hotel & Spa home, and well-known food writer and cookbook author Paula Disbrowe, Ripe is devoted to local, sustainably-minded Texas producers. Ripe will feature an ongoing calendar of special market-driven meals, cooking demos and culinary events like cookbook signings, as well as wine and spirits tastings. The August market features two cooking demonstrations highlighting how to use the market’s products—including terrific summer cocktails—at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Sustenio’s demonstration kitchen. The market will occur weekly beginning in September after Labor Day.
The Pi-shaped pie pan that I created with a couple of friends has been funded on Kickstarter! Furthermore, all the $15 early bird pans have sold out! This has been really exciting and I am so happy to see this project take off with geeky bakers around the world. Special thanks to the SA Current for writing a blog post about the Pi Pans, and be sure to check out the video for more info (you better watch until the end, we put in something special after the credits a la Marvel movies!).
This weekend I am going to catch a Texas Rangers baseball game in Arlington. This has become a yearly tradition that I always look forward to, even more so when they are doing well. One of the best parts about going to the ballpark is the food—here is a blog post about the ridiculous Boomstick hotdog that I had last year as well as other ballpark food that I fondly remember. I look forward to update the story soon!
