As you can probably tell, there have been a few changes around the blog. I hope that you are enjoying the new look, feel and articles that have been posted on SA Flavor (if you do, why don’t you Like us on Facebook?)! There are going to be some exciting things coming your way in 2013, so be ready for them. In the meantime, will the weather ever turn cold? I am ready for some Mama Margie’s caldo already. On to the Quick Bites!
- I had a fantastic dinner at Lüke this past week. The restaurant holds a special place in my heart because that was where I took my wife early on when we were dating, and after we got engaged we stopped by for some drinks and shrimp in a cup. Other than stopping by for Happy Hour, I have not been since Chef McHugh left to start his own venture. Rest assured that Chef Russ has not missed a step. The service was great, and if you are looking for a fillet you can’t beat the one at Lüke. If it does get cold, be sure to finish off the meal with a hot buttered rum.

- The tamale fest was this past weekend at the Pearl Brewery, and with the upper 70s temperatures it felt more like Fiesta than Christmas! There were thousands of people at the event and parking was scarce. Some of the highlights were the Culinary Institute of Americas open faced tamal, which was incredibly spicy and had a nice corn garnish. Garcia Foods offered a barbacoa tamal, something I had never even considered. I was impressed by the amount of barbacoa that they shoved in the masa and it had a really nice flavor without being too greasy.
CIA open faced tamal – interesting take and quite spicy. But the king of the tamales has to go to Tellez Tamales – their spicy pork tamal was my favorite, having the right amount of grease to prevent it from being dried out like some of the others at the event. My friends thought that the chicken tamal was even better; I still don’t know how Tellez prevents it from getting dry. Regardless, we all could agree that Tellez was our favorite stop.
Tellez Tamales, the king of the tamales – both the spicy pork and chicken were terrific and not the least bit dry. - Saturday from Noon – 11PM is the 1st Annual Burger Brawl at The Point Park, the food truck park located north of the Rim shopping center on I-10. The best food truck burger will be crowned by guest judges @safoodtrckstlkr, @ShrinkingFoodie and @MySavorSA in addition to a vote by all the fans. Exercise your right to vote, eat juicy burgers and listen to live music.
- If you have children, you might want to check out the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio’s 4th annual Gingerbread Design Family Workshop on Saturday from 10AM – 3PM. It is free, open to the public and sure to give you and your family a sugar high.
