Recently, a friend an I dropped in for happy hour at Lüke on the River Walk before going to Geekdom to do some work on a side project for a startup we have. After all, you need to be happy if you are going to be doing a software migration!
Lüke offers signature cocktails at 50 per cent off during happy hour. I decided to try their mint julep made with Garrison Brothers bourbon and Fredericksburg peaches – it was like an alcoholic snow cone and was served in a fancy cup.
They also do classic cocktails well, and if you haven’t ever had one I would suggest trying a Sazerac.
At most happy hours in town you will be able to get appetizers at a discount, but the quality of appetizers at Lüke are not only tasty, but also economical. I have been a fan of their pretzels (which was not available at the previous happy hour I attended), but their meat pies are fifty cents each, which includes a tasty dipping sauce.
Lüke consistently has a deal on oysters, either the Gulf oysters for fifty cents or these special oysters that were prepared butter and spices for a dollar.
The tartine was a nice addition, a crunchy piece of bread, cheese corn and bit of bacon. Biting into the appetizer you get a mix of textures with the saltiness of the bacon.
By far, my favorite item is the slider-of-the-day. At three dollars, this is the most expensive item on their happy hour menu, but both the pulled pork and tuna slider were wonderful.
Happy hour at Lüke typically runs from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., my friend and I placed an order for an additional drink at 5:55 p.m. to slide in under the cutoff. This turned out to be completely unnecessary because on Tuesday (the day I dropped by) Lüke runs happy hour to 8:00 p.m. as part of the Downtown Tuesday campaign, where visitors can park for free on the street or in a public lot after 5:00 p.m.! After learning of this information, suddenly the happy hour turned into a happy-three-hours.
