The other day I answered this question on Quora about where to go out for a drink in San Antonio. My favorite bar is Hills and Dales, the self proclaimed “The Center of the Universe.” In what was once the outskirts of town, it is weird to see a posh furniture store (well I am assuming it is posh, I have never been inside) next to a biker bar. Hills and Dales has a wide selection of local, craft and international brews and the Welsh lady tending bar is incredibly friendly. There is nothing like sitting on a bench outside when the weather turns crisp in the Fall. Protip: You can get more beer for the same cost by bringing your own mug for them to fill up.
Here are some other favorites:
- The Esquire – for when you feel like drinking a craft cocktail in a pre-prohibition vibe off of the River Walk served by a staff who looks like they were a wrestler or trapeez artist from the 1920s
- Broadway Sports Bar – for when you want a rowdy crowd and low tab to watch the Spurs play
- Flying Saucer – for when you want to try a huge variety of beers, catch a decent fire sale and maybe try to get your name on a plate
- SOHO – for when you want an insane martini (creme brulee or Girlscout samoa cookie anyone?) and don’t want to be judged for it
- The Friendly Spot – for when you want a craft brew, to be outside and don’t mind crowds on a First Friday
- Bar America – for when you want a cheap beer, enjoy old jukeboxes and want to keep it real on a First Friday
- Spechts – for when you want to get out of the city and into the country and enjoy a full moon
- Kennedy’s – for when you are feeling a little Irish
- Lion and the Rose (Alamo Heights) – for when you are Jonesing for a smoke in a bar and want to watch “football”
- Thirsty Turtle – for when you just feel like being crazy
