This past Fiesta I was blown away by the support for our first ever medals (you know the Barbacoa y Big Red ones)! That response gave me that confidence that I could open an honest-to-goodness SA Flavor online store—but I need your help.
I have three hot designs that are unique to San Antonio. One pays homage to Lotería again, but this time with a Spurs twist. Another is a total “inside baseball” reference about a culinary dish invented here in San Antonio, the puffy taco. And one brings to life a fun Spanish greeting. Check out the Kickstarter video and see all the images (mocked up on stock photography from American Apparel, the company that we will be sourcing our shirts because they are made in the good ole U-S-A) of the designs with the stories below! I hope that you can help me out!
¿Qué pasa?
When I moved to San Antonio over ten years ago, I learned a lot of Spanish phrases. One of those was introduced to me by Diana (she kind of took me under her wing as a surrogate mother), who would say, “¿Qué te pasa, calabaza?” If you’re from South Texas, you know that the expected response is, “Nada, nada limonada.” This design pays tribute to that saying—and that moment in my personal San Antonio history.
La Mano
My fascination with Lotería drew me back to riffing on those cards in a similar manner to La Barbacoa y Big Red. This time I decided to keep the actual title of a real card (La Mano), but remix it by having a giant hand with a basketball behind it. And with Kawhi Leonard’s larger-than-life hands, I knew that I had to modify the original number on the card to match his jersey—2.
I Raced the Puffy Taco
San Antonio loves puffy tacos—after all they were invented at Ray’s Drive Inn. This love is shown in all its grandeur when a child races a puffy taco mascot at the San Antonio Missions minor league baseball game. I dig this design because it appeals to folks just wanting a goofy shift, folks who want to rep puffy tacos and folks who are die-hard Missions fans.
What’s the most awesome thing about this Kickstarter is that when you order a shirt, you’re going to also get an incredibly awesome Puro San Antonio bumper sticker that could be:
- Yo ♥ Barbacoa
- God Bless Puffy Tacos
- I’d Rather Be Honking on Commerce
Thanks so much for your support San Antonio—I’m truly amazed by how amazing my readers, friends and local community have supported me in the past. With your help, I look forward to getting a good start with launching this store!
