Puro San Antonio. This is the phrase that’s used—often tongue in cheek—when something is authentically SA. When it just strikes the perfect chord with long-time residents who love the Alamo City. Things like fruit cups with chile and lime, a truck rolling down the highway with five Spurs flags (and one Texas one) or stacks of cups at NIOSA are all Puro San Antonio.
It also happens to be the name of one of the most fun Twitter accounts the 2-1-0 has. Started in 2009 by local Brenda Muñoz, @PuroSanAntonio has been dishing out unique brand of SATX humor behind an avatar of the gigantic North Star Mall cowboy boots. And with over 31,000 followers (!), locals can’t get enough of her wit, snark and love of San Antonio.
This year, I’m incredibly proud to have partnered with Brenda on her first ever Fiesta Medal! And it features one of the most #PuroSanAntonio moments in recent years: the tuber of the Memorial Day Flood of 2013! Flooding is no joke in San Antonio—always remember “Turn around, don’t drown” people—but when this massive flood sent water into most city streets, one local had a little fun with it. Lisa Krantz, a San Antonio Express News photographer, captured the #PuroSanAntonio moment of pure revelry with the gentleman floating down the street, beer in tow.
The medal shows a man tubing with a blue can with the city skyline adorned with papel picados—those festive little paper flags seen at Fiesta—in the background. And $1 from every medal sold will go to the San Antonio Humane Society!
“That is where I met the love of my life, Whopper,” Brenda told me. “Seven years ago, I adopted this Labrador puppy as a Christmas gift for my kids. He became my best friend and got me through a lot of changes and difficult times in my life—most notably my bout with cancer.”
Brenda said that she loves the work that the San Antonio Humane Society does and hopes they can take in as many animals as possible to make us a “no kill” city. “Supporting an organization like this who is working towards that goal means a lot to me.”
