Feels like fall is here; the cool weather has been a welcome change to San Antonio. Another change going on at the Pearl where more retail shopping is being added. Dos Carolinas is one shop they added that I want to check out. The shop makes custom guayaberas that look pretty rad. I had a coworker buy one of their shirts and he got to pick the fabric, colors and patterns to get a truly custom piece of clothing. On to the quick bites!
- If you are looking for a chill spot to enjoy this fall patio weather, be sure to check out The Friendly Spot off of South Alamo. The ice house has hundreds of craft brews and always has a daily special so you can try out something new. The food isn’t bad either; I got a BBQ, mushroom, Swiss burger that was pretty tasty!

- If you are a fan of cooking competitions on TV, you might want to check out the Food Truck Face Off at the HEB at Blanco and 1604. Jason Dady’s Duk Truck, Johnny Hernandez True Flavors, Pieter Sypesteyn’s Where Y’At and Michael Anthony Romo’s MARS Mobile Kitchen will be duking it out for a good cause. The event starts at 10AM and the chefs will prepare a meal that has to include one of HEB’s primo picks as an ingredient in their dish. Over $18,000 will be awarded to the four chef’s to be donated to the charity of their choice. After the competition the trucks will be opened up for customer to enjoy.
- Have you ever had the desire to open up a restaurant or a food truck? (I think that this dream is probably right up there with starting a band or writing a novel.) If you find yourself in that situation, you might want to read this Stick In The Mud article, the latest post on the Brave Tart blog by Kentucky based pastry chef Stella Parks. In it she talks about finding a place in the world where you thrive instead of chasing after something you might love. Excellent read.
- I found myself at Aldaco’s of Stone Oak last night and was impressed with the patio that is at one of the higher points in the city and looks out over a valley. I enjoyed the grilled baja fish tacos and the white rice. On the suggestion of a friend I ordered an avocado margarita, which was very tangy and smooth, almost like a smoothie. While the drink was good, prepare your mouth for it to be a different experience than any frozen or on-the-rocks margarita out there.
