One of the reasons that I love Fiesta is how it brings people together—that’s the case with me and fifth grader Gaby Montelongo, the creator of the 2017 Mariachi Fiesta Dog Medal! Gaby’s mom, Shanon, is a good friend and colleague. I joined Shanon’s team five years ago and found out that Gaby loved Fiesta Medals, so I’d always bring her some from events. When I started making medals for people in the community this year, I knew that I had to get Gaby to make one.
What’s super cool about this medal is that it’s based on Gaby’s very own artwork! She had an incredible idea of making a Mariachi Fiesta Dog drawing—you can see the original drawing below:
I loved the idea and ran some options by her (including the bow tie was one of them) and she wanted to change up the colors a bit. One dollar from every medal sold goes to benefit San Antonio Pets Alive!, a charity created to help make SA a no-kill city.
One of the core tenants of the charity is the foster and adoption programs, something very meaningful to Gaby. “My pets bring me so much love, and I want everyone to have the love of a pet like I do,” she told me.
I’m so thrilled to help make this medal and work with such a talented young artist! This is the perfect medal to spread the Fiesta spirit and #PuppyLove!
