Balancing work, school, friends and family leaves me little time to think about properly planning for food. When a 4:00 a.m. wake up call comes and I’m in no mood to cook, I locate the nearest Los Robertos. I’m not sure exactly when I stumbled across this gem, but I was pleased to find that this restaurant has three establishments here in San Antonio serving Mexican food 24-hours a day. I know, your mind just exploded at the thought of never ending tacos.
On a recent visit, I grabbed a seat at one of the square diner tables and glanced around, my eyes happy to land on a bountiful salsa bar Surveying the list of options, I knew immediately that this was a new restaurant to add to my list hole-in-the-wall spots.
I stick to the basics when trying out a new place, so I ordered a plate of tacos al pastor, or mini pork tacos. The waitress emphasized that the tacos are lightly tossed in fresh pineapple juice. I handed the menu back and explored the salsa bar—there were too many salsas to try on my four mini tacos. Challenge accepted Los Robertos: I’ll be back to try them all.
Although I never tasted the pineapple, the pork was cooked to perfection and topped with a healthy amount of cilantro and diced onions. I finished off the four mini tacos with three randomly picked salsas. The glutton in me wanted Mexican food now and Mexican food later, so I ordered a California burrito to go. It was chock full with potatoes, steak, pico de gallo and cheese, and I added sour cream and guacamole for good measure. Who needs Chipotle when you have Los Robertos?
Overall Los Robertos is an inviting experience—at any time of the day—with friendly staff, tasty food and a salsa bar that’s worth the trip alone. Try out one of the three locations and let me know which spicy salsa is your favorite.
