The Kawhi Question is seriously the best shoe commercial in a LONNNNNNNGGGG time, like possibly since Mars Blackmon was on the scene. And it features none other than San Antonio Spur’s own Kawhi Leonard. Check it out below:
What I love about the commercial is the throw back, dialogue-forward feel; it’s as if you’re watching a Tarantino film rather than a shoe commercial. The pacing is wild, with quick cuts that features what number 2 does best on both sides of the ball. And some of the stats that they throw out (more steals than fouls!) make even the most seasoned basketball fan stop and scratch their head.
But the moment I love best is when there is silence after the moderator asks, “Gentlemen, consider a hypothetical question: could Kawhi get buckets on Kawhi.” Just like how the best notes in jazz are the ones that go unplayed, it’s that moment of space before the storm of response that takes this commercial to the next level.
After all, with a player who plays both sides of the ball so tenaciously that he draws comparisons to His Airness it’s the Kawhi Question is one that will be debated plenty at barbecues, barbershops, taquerias and the AT&T concession lines in the seasons to come. But what do you think? Offense or defense?
