Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve seen the future tonight and you’re going to love it. In fact, as I speak I am enjoying a Freetail Bat Outta Helles that was delivered to my doorstep. Beginning on Friday you can now get beer, wine, alcohol and mixers delivered on demand. ON DEMAND PEOPLE.
New York based startup Minibar has their official launch this Friday in the Alamo City, but I was given a preview of the service by the company tonight. And best of all, I have information on how to save you $10 on your first order (keep reading).”We’re thrilled to be expanding to San Antonio—our ninth new market this year—and are excited to provide its residents with an easier way to shop for wine, spirits, beer and more,” said Lara Crystal, co-founder of Minibar.
To get started, simply navigate to the Minibar website where you’ll be directed to download either the iPhone or Android app. A couple of minutes later and you’ll have it on your phone, ready to shop their selection.
Minibar let me make my first order for free, so I decided to go for a liquor and couple of beers. They have a pretty comprehensive liquor selection although I am sad to see that there were no Mezcals listed. I decided to go for the Bulleit Rye, my old standard for an Old Fashioned.
They also offer a wide selection of beer, with many of the craft breweries represented. I decided to keep it local and get the Devil’s Backbone from Real Ale and the Bat Outta Helles by Freetail Brewing Co. You’ll want to note that currently Freetail doesn’t come up in the search—you have to find it alphabetically in the beer list. While San Antonio is represented by Freetail and Alamo, I would like to see some of our other breweries get added to the app (Ranger Creek, hint, hint).
A couple of clicks later and I was on my way. As promised the boos arrived before an hour passed. I was greeted by a friendly courier who said I was the first Minibar customer in San Antonio! It’s company policy for the courier to check your ID, so be sure to have your driver’s license handy by the door so you don’t have to go searching for it (rookie mistake!).
I was impressed by their pricing—it seems completely inline with a discount liquor store (a few items seemed one or two bucks higher). There’s a minimum spend of $25 and a delivery fee of $5 assessed on the order, but Minibar is waiving that for the first month of business here in San Antonio. And don’t forget to tip your driver a little something too.
So how do you save $10? All you have to do is enter in promo code SANANTONIO on your first order and you get $10 taken off your bill. I’m not getting any kickbacks people, and if you use the promo code that a friend gives you, you’ll only save $5 (with the other $5 going to them as credit).
At launch the Minibar delivery area will be the following:
- Alamo Heights
- Olmos Park
- North Central (south of 410 Loop)
- Northwest Side
- Far North Central (Stone Oak, Timberwood Park, Encino Park, JW Marriott Hill Country Resort)
While some may be disappointed that we don’t have flying cars or rocket packs, I’m just fine with having this little technological innovation at my fingertips.
Disclosure: Minibar did provide my first order for free.
