Not everyone has the luxury of living in a city with an abundance of delicious breakfast tacos like us San Antonians. We’ve become spoiled and when we travel to other cities, it’s hard to find a place that meets our standards—especially if that city is Austin.
Austin’s tendency to claim they have the best breakfast tacos leaves all of us laughing our way to our local taqueria. To be frank, their breakfast tacos suck—I learned that pretty fast during my three years of living there. However, their only saving grace is Juan in a Million, a place that reminds me of the food I grew up with in the Southside of San Antonio.

I am unsure if I have mentioned this before, but I am fairly certain that my lifeblood consists of coffee. Because I am not a morning person, I depend on it heavily to become one with society. With that being said, a reason I look forward to going to Juan in a Million is because they know how to serve a mean cup of joe. It’s rich with a subtle sweetness and its aroma is made straight from a caffeine-addict’s dreams.

Their chips and salsa also deserve some praise. Juan in a Million’s salsa has a thick consistency and an addictive spiciness. It’s the type of heat that makes you unaware of how hot your mouth is, until you take a break from cramming chips into your mouth.

Juan in a Million’s most recognized item on the menu—and my personal favorite—is their “Don Juan” El Taco Grande. This taco is a mountain of egg, potato, bacon and cheese piled on top of a flour tortilla. Their “secret combination” of ingredient creates the perfect flavor of cheesy-egg goodness for our breakfast taco-loving taste buds.

If you order the “Don Juan,” asking for extra tortillas is a must—the serving size is about four to five tacos. And if you want to add a little kick to your meal, make sure to sprinkle their salsa onto your taco.
If you ever find yourself in our state’s capital and missing your San Antonio breakfast tacos, Juan in a Million is the place to be. It’s located at 2300 East Cesar Chavez and open all week from 7am to 3pm.
