The 8-1 San Antonio Spurs have put together three old-fashioned stompings against the Knicks, 76ers and Wizards, effectively running each of the teams out of the gym. I was at the last game against the Wizards, and here is what you need to know behind the stats.
- While it is no secret that I am a fan of the super nachos found in the H-E-B Fan Zone, I stumbled onto a plate of food that gives them a run for their money. On the first floor, by the entrance to the stadium from the Overtime Theater, is a place that serves up some mean barbeque at a reasonable price. For $9.75 you get brisket, smoked turkey a link of sausage and two sides (go for the potato salad and beans), along with a fixins bar that includes pickles, pickled okra, onions and an array of Jack Daniels BBQ sauces (I was partial to the hot, my friend to the Mango). I can’t believe the value of this plate at a sports stadium; just try to get the same meal at any BBQ joint for ten bucks after the game. The brisket had that layer of fat that was perfect, not rubbery in the least.
- USAA sponsored the game as a salute to veterans and the Spurs took the court in specialty camouflage jerseys that were awesome. Those jerseys were a hit with the fans as well and were flying off the racks at the fan shop. The SA Flavor Fan of the Game was sporting one of those cool jerseys alongside a couple of the Silver Dancers in camo pants.
- Speaking of the Silver Dancers, during one of the breaks a woman in the military sang a rousing edition of God Bless America while some of the Silver Dancers did a ballet-esque dance in long flowing white dresses.
- With such a cool jersey, I was hoping that Tim Duncan might have an equally cool shoe. While Tim isn’t a person to have the flashy shoe deal, he has had some cool kicks in the past (notably the Skeleton Shoe one Halloween). Even from the second deck I could see he was wearing something cool and was happy that Ben Hunted tweeted out this picture of his shoes.

Final Score: Spurs 92 – Wizards 79. Kawhi Leonard got off to a blistering start, scoring 8 points in a blink of an eye. I was hoping to see a career night, but after getting hot it seemed like he didn’t get the rock that often. Marco Belinelli put together a pretty nice stat line, flirting a little bit with a triple double. And there was an incredible no-look-over-the-shoulder pass from Nando de Colo at the end of the game. Even though the team has blown out their opponents, it may be due to the caliber or the teams they have played rather than clicking on all cylinders just yet.
